University of Detroit loses second assistant coach in a week

The University of Detroit has had two assistant basketball coaches abruptly resign, along with the school’s athletic director, this week with little explanation provided by the university.

The Detroit Free Press reported on Thursday that athletic director Keri Gaither and assistant basketball coach Derek Thomas were stepping down. On Friday, Perry Farrell of the Free Press reported that another assistant, Carlos Briggs, was leaving Ray McCallum‘s staff:

Gary Litchman, director of media relations, marketing and public affairs, said UDM could not comment on personnel matters when asked whether Briggs was still with the team. McCallum did not return calls from the Free Press.

Asked whether McCallum and his other assistant, Jay Smith, still were with the team, Litchman said they were.

It’s obviously improper to speculate without concrete information, but it’s fair to say that this looks highly suspicious with the season just days from starting. Hopefully more of an explanation will come out in the next week.
