In last week’s look at potential Mr. Basketball winners in Michigan, I noted that Romulus is in the unique position of having two legitimate candidates for the award — Wes Clark and E.C. Matthews. Clark, Matthews, Leo Edwards and the team’s other seniors, however, are focused on something else — a state title. From Jared Purcell of MLive Detroit:

After making it all the way to the Class A semifinals last year and falling short of the championship game by a single basket, Romulus has carried a sharp chip on its shoulder since then.

“We don’t want to have that same feeling that we felt last year,” Edwards said. “I don’t think no senior on the team wants to feel the same thing we felt like last year.”

Romulus lost a tough game Saturday to a team it’ll likely have to contend with if the goal is a state title, Detroit Pershing. Matthews took the blame for that loss:

Romulus managed to make a game out of it behind the second half aggressive play of E.C. Matthews. Matthews had 16 points, most of which came in the fourth quarter to help the Eagles pull within three points with 21.6 seconds left in the game.

“If I don’t play good then we are not going to win, and I let us down again,” Matthews said.
