Juwan Howard Jr.: Watching Detroit win Horizon championship taught him to “focus on basketball and everything will be OK”

Losing three players from a Horizon League championship team who are now playing professionally — Chase Simon, LaMarcus Lowe and Eli Holman — will make repeating as champions a tough task the University of Detroit. One impact transfer who could help ease the losses of those players is former Detroit Pershing standout and Western Michigan player Juwan Howard Jr. Howard told the Detroit Free Press that watching the team’s success last year impacted his own preparation:

“Last year I got a chance to watch our team win a championship,” said Howard. “It taught me to focus on basketball and everything will be OK. Watching Ray I got a chance to see what he does well and the adjustments he made.”

With perennial league power Butler moving to the Atlantic 10 this season, the road in the Horizon might be a bit easier, but there are still plenty of talented teams at the top of the division who will battle with Detroit for the league title and an NCAA Tournament berth.
