Flint native Javontae Hawkins ‘better than advertised’ so far at South Florida

Javontae Hawkins, a former standout at Beecher and Powers Catholic and one of the top players to come out of the Flint area in years, is getting ready for his freshman season at South Florida and has already made an impression. From Rames Ali of USF’s student newspaper:

Heath said Hawkins has been better than he expected before initial workouts over the summer.

“Javontae Hawkins is probably a little bit better than advertised,” he said. “He’s a very good player, very aggressive, shoots the ball better than we originally thought. I think athletically he fits in well with how we want to defend and guard people.”

Junior Victor Rudd Jr. echoed Fitzpatrick’s thoughts on Hawkins, a guard hailing from Flint, Mich., and LeDay, a Texas native.

“Javontae Hawkins after some time is going to be crazy,” he said.

Hawkins played his senior season at a prep school, but he was known for being a gym rat in the Flint area. I didn’t get to see him play as a senior, so I’m not sure how much he’s improved, but I expect him to get the most out of his talents at college if he keeps putting in the work he did while he was in Flint.
