Wayne State announced that Chene Phillips, a Detroit Renaissance grad, has transferred from Liberty University, a Division I college in Virigina. From the news release:

Phillips played in 26 games for the Liberty Flames a year ago, averaging 1.5 points and 1.6 rebounds per contest in 10.6 minutes per game.  In his rookie campaign at Liberty, Phillips averaged 1.9 points and 1.2 rebounds per match while earning Big South Presidential Honor Roll accolades.  As a senior at Renaissance, Phillips guided the Phoenix to a 16-7 record, while averaging 23.1 points, 4.5 assists and four steals per game to earn Detroit Free Press First Team All-PSL honors.  He was also named to the Bankhoops.com Class A All-State squad as well as the Detroit News All-Area Third Team as a senior.  His junior year in high school, he tallied 12 points and 4.5 assists per contest.  Phillips scored 16 points in the 2010 Michigan High School Boys All-Star Basketball Game.

Since he’s transferring from a Division I to a Division II, Phillips, a 6-foot-2 guard, will be eligible to play right away and won’t have to sit out a year.
