Mott Community College will be well-represented at the 2012 NJCAA National All-Star Game this Saturday in Las Vegas. The East and West rosters are compiled a mix of Division I, II and III JUCO players from around the country.

Mott’s John Taylor, the Division II National Player of the Year, will be on the East squad, which will be coached by Mott’s Steve Schmidt. No other Michigan players made the roster, but with Taylor and Sullivan (NY) Community College’s Cleanthony Early, Schmidt will have two reigning National Players of the Year at his disposal. Early actually won the Division III award two consecutive years.

Schmidt was also recently honored by Mott. NBC 25 reports that Schmidt is the first non-Mott graduate to earn a ‘Distinguished Alumnus’ award. He was given the honorary award for his contributions to Mott in his 21 years there.

“All my players are alumni, so to be recognized as a honorary alumni and the first one they’ve recognized, it’s a humbling experience,” Schmidt said. “I really don’t know how to put into words, I just appreciate everything that’s come this way. But most of all, I appreciate the hard work of our players.”
